We found it by chance, really, we were driving on the tiny country road when we saw a sign announcing medieval ruins, not even a name or any details. You had to be curious or with time on your hands to find out more. Since we were both, we took that right turn and started to drive up the hill. It took a little while. These things are built at the top, otherwise why bother?
Up there we got inside an ancient castle’s courtyard through a crumbling wall, looked at a row of windmills in the distance, picked up some rosemary and admired that 700 years-old chapel like she was some pretty young thing. In the end, the only reason to come down was to get some lunch. Next time I’ll bring a picnic!

The site is south of Rochefort en Valdaine.
The Drôme is located in the south-east of France, less than two hours north of Marseille.
Comme beaucoup de belles choses, elle nous est apparue par hasard. Le signe sur le bord de la petite route annonçait simplement un site médiéval, pas de nom ni d’autre détails. Il fallait être curieux et pas trop pressé pour en découvrir plus. C’était notre cas, aussi, on prit le petit chemin qui grimpait la colline. Il était plus long qu’on ne l’avait imaginé. Ces choses-là sont construites tout en haut, sinon à quoi bon ?
Là-haut, on est d’abord rentré dans la cour de l’ancien château par un mur à demi-effondré, avant d’admirer la rangée d’éoliennes perchées sur la colline d’en face, de cueillir un peu de romarin et de s’extasier devant cette chapelle quasi-millénaire comme si elle était de première jeunesse. On a fini par redescendre, il fallait bien déjeuner, mais la prochaine fois, je viens avec un pique-nique !
