You know how delighted we were with our trip to the Alps a couple of winters ago, snow is rare occurrence in our travels and we welcomed it with a genuine enthusiasm. We enjoyed a great amount of sun during these few days and I indeed keep very light and cheerful memories of our time there. That was it was all the more interesting to put together today’s series which decidedly doesn’t seem to sing the same tune. Looking at some of my pictures I saw another reality emerging, one of a world in quasi black and white, a world of dark woods, burnt wood and frail trees, a vision of winter that echoed another kind of fairy tale, crueler and more honest on the brutality of the cold season. Seeing these, I remembered the words of our guide, coming from Paris the contrast was so impressive that we were awestruck by this immaculate landscape, mesmerized by its calming effect, while she was confessing with a half-smile to counting the days before she could finally see some green again.

Have you seen The Witch ?
J‘ai déjà raconté ici à quel point nous étions rentrés ravis de notre séjour dans les Alpes il y a de ça quelques hivers. La neige est rarement au programme de nos voyages et on l’aura accueilli avec l’enthousiasme des novices. Le soleil puissant qui nous aura accompagnés durant ces quelques jours aura d’ailleurs contribué au souvenir gai et lumineux que j’ai du paysage. C’est ce qui rend la série d’aujourd’hui d’autant plus surprenante et intéressante pour moi, car elle ouvre la porte sur une autre réalité, celle d’un monde en quasi-noir et blanc, d’un monde de forêts sombres, de bois brûlé et d’arbres frêles. Elle laisse entrevoir l’inspiration d’un tout autre genre de conte, plus cruel et plus honnête sur la rudesse de ces paysages glacés. A regarder ces images, une remarque anodine de notre guide me revenait à l’esprit, alors que nous étions encore aveuglés par la beauté de ces visions immaculés étrangement apaisantes, elle confessait avec un demi sourire se languir du jour où elle verrait à nouveau du vert…
